On a blustery and rainy National Tree Day, the Mi’kmaw Conservation Group (MCG) and Millbrook Fisheries hosted a tree planting event in Millbrook First Nation. MCG and Fisheries technicians led a handful of brave participants to plant 585 trees and shrubs next to the Pow Wow grounds in Millbrook. This event was organized as part of MCG’s and Millbrook Fisheries efforts to plant trees and shrubs along the banks of Lepper Brook and McClures Brook to help increase the number and kinds of tree species in those areas. The trees will also provide shade for fish and bank support in the riparian zone, which is the area next to the stream.

The event was sponsored through the Eco-Action Community Fund and supported by the local Atlantic Superstore who provided some of the refreshments. In addition, Millbrook Maintenance helped by clearing areas for planting, providing storage for our trees and the use of a small tractor and trailer. Many thanks to those who helped out and to those that braved the elements to help plant these beautiful trees.
