Halifax, NS - Six Indigenous youth from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island will be traveling to Cambodia, Guyana and Kenya in October for a four-month international internship. Camryn Sock and Maisyn Sock from Eskasoni, Owen Gould and Roman Levi from Waycobah, Dakota Francis from Pictou Landing, and Cassidy McKellop from Lennox Island were selected from candidates across Canada to participate program called International Internships for Indigenous Youth Program (IIIY). A total of 20 indigenous youth from across Canada will be working and living overseas through the program. Presently there is a lot of activity in the Bay of Fundy, specifically the Minas Passage, concerning Tidal Energy and the use of tidal turbine technology to generate power. The site known as “FORCE” (Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy) is a testing site for local and international companies to test their turbine technology designs on the highest tides in the world. FORCE provides the electrical infrastructure to deliver the tidal power to the grid. FORCE oversees an independently reviewed environmental monitoring program in the Minas Passage. MCG is excited to be partnering with Tim Horton Children’s Foundation to offer a 3 day, 2 night camp experience to Mi'kmaw Youth. Who can go to camp? We are looking for Youth ages 11 -13 to participate in a 3 day and 2 night Camp! We are also looking for chaperones who are over the age of 21 and would be willing to have an RCMP background check completed. When & Where is camp? MCG Staff have been operating  a smolt wheel in the Stewiacke River since the beginning of May. The wheel gently guides fish into a live well where they can be measured and weighed. Once the technicians have recorded the data, the fish are released to continue on their journey. The Truro Daily News joined us at the wheel to talk about the project. Our Friends at Fort Folly Habitat Recovery (FFHR) have been monitoring & collecting salmon smolt from the Petitcodiac river for the last few years in an effort to save a portion of these fish from dying in the Bay of Fundy. FFHR are involved in an innovative collaboration that sees smolt captured from the river raised to maturity in their own conservation sea pens in the Bay of Fundy. Culverts are structures designed to allow the flow of water to pass underneath a man-made structure such as a road. Unfortunately, through weathering, improper installation or debris build up, culverts can become barriers to fish migration. In the summer and fall of 2014, MCG took to the streams in the Stewiacke watershed and surrounding MCG Communities, to assess culverts as they relate to Atlantic salmon migration. There are over 1000 potential water crossings in the Stewiacke Watershed and this summer we were able to visit over 150 of them, giving 75 full assessments. Preparing “Mi’kmaw Communities’ Water Utilities for Climate Change” was created in response to widespread concern among Community members for the health of their drinking water, now and in the future. MCG will take a holistic approach to evaluate the impacts that climate change will have on the First Nations water and waste-water treatment facilities while also considering how the Community as a whole will be affected. MCG was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Annie Paul of Indian Brook (Sipkne'katik Band). Last winter, Annie was kind enough to open her home to us and share her talent for creating wooden flowers out of wisqoq (black ash). When we asked Annie if she had any flowers that we could photograph she smiled and said , 'I'm so sorry dear, but I've given them all away." She pointed to a photo on the wall of the Pope receiving a bouquet of her flowers and asked that we photograph that instead. We will remember her as a humble and generous lady. We [...]
