We live in one of the most important times in terms of opportunity that exists to repair the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in this country. Atlantic and Shortnose Sturgeon was an important resource for the Mi'kmaq, when their population was plentiful. Sturgeon species provided not only a food source but oil and leather as well. DFO heard from fishers that a sturgeon ID card would be useful to assist in reporting sturgeon catch or bycatch by species (Shortnose vs. Atlantic).
